  1. Gulliver’s Book Review

In the book Gulliver’s Travels Gulliver went on many expeditions, but with each new expedition he seemed to run into a bad situation. Like the time when he was with the Lilliputians and they were going to cut out his eyes while slowly staving him to death, and when he was with the giants he was left all alone and a bird carries him away, and then dropped him in the river. My point is that is if had learned from his first few bad experiences than he would not have gone back to sea and would not be the way he was at the end of the book.

  2. Gulliver’s Travels Book Review

Gulliver’s Travels was a strange novel. It wasn’t an attention grabber and it didn’t really have a good story line. If you didn’t understand or know that Jonathan Swift was a misanthrope it would be hard for you to understand his writing. You just jump into the story not really knowing what the background is. In the beginning he ends up at this island with billions of little people and he is a giant. He is kept captive and is put in a house. Once they realize that having him around isn’t such a good idea he escapes before they poison him. Then he is ends up on another island but this time he is with a whole bunch of giants and he is the little person. The whole time these crazy stories are going on you might not realize it but he is being rudely negative and pessimistic and pointing out all of their flaws and nit-picking at every possible thing that is wrong with them. If they are nothing like the character “Gulliver” then there is something wrong with them. It just wasn’t a good novel. Gulliver’s Travels was okay but it gets really confusing and if you were to just jump in the middle of a chapter you would be so lost that you probably would just put it down and never read it. It was just confusing and very negative.

  3. Cannibalism
The book Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift has some example of cannibalism. The kind of cannibalism in this book isn’t a human eating another person but the down grading of one person’s self of esteem, religion culture or beliefs to make one feel better. Gulliver is always negative only telling about the bad things and never keeping a positive outlook. He is often putting down the island’s culture, government or their beliefs and praising his own countries culture, government and beliefs. He maintains this outlook though the book until he lands on the island of Houyhnhnms. He then starts to praise the Houyhnhnms society and cannibalizes his own country and peoples. He becomes disgusted with human nature and criticizes everything they do or have done making the Houhnhnms the superb society. He wants to become part of the Houhnhnms society because to him they the perfect society. He is frighten when he is forced to leave because he is scared that he will fall back into what he once was which is human which is exactly what he cannibalizes and looks down on the as a society that would be horrible to live in.

  4. Book Review: A theme in Gulliver’s travels

Gulliver’s Travels is definitely unlike any other book I’ve ever read. It always had me guessing “what’s going to happen next”, the whole time I was reading the book it always took me by surprise. One of the themes I did notice about the book was whether it was in Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, or Houyhnhnms the people were either intolerant or even prejudice. One his first voyage the Empires of Lilliput and Blefuscu were intolerant towards each other by the way they broke their eggs. His second voyage where he’s telling the king about England and the King is prejudice about their way of life. The third voyage the people there are ignorant because Gulliver would not use their flappers to speak to one another. In the fourth voyage the Houyhnhnms tell him to leave because they didn’t want a “yahoo” to be living amongst themselves. This theme relates back to now days were we’re often prejudice against different races for either their beliefs, heritage, or even their society. I would defiantly recommend this book.

  5. INTOLERANCE

The theme for the book Gulliver’s Travels is “intolerance.” People do not accept others for who they are. In the book, the Lilliputians don’t accept Gulliver because he is really huge compared to them. When Gulliver is in Brobdingnag, Gulliver is the tiny one. One of the men makes Gulliver dance and does stuff like that for people so he can make money for himself. He is taking advantage of him, practically using him. Then he gets tired of Gulliver and sells him to this queen. This book relates to high school kids. Just because some people may look different, we don’t accept them and are mean to them. We are very judgmental and don’t even get to know them. All Gulliver is trying to do is help the people out and the people are denote to him and punish him. But Gulliver doesn’t know any better because he lives a different lifestyle than them. People don’t need to be so judgmental. If they got to know the person they would probably end up liking him/her. I would recommend this book for high school kids or young adults.

  6. Gulliver’s Book Review

My opinion on the novel was really disappointed on how swift wrote the novel, and how he continued Gulliver’s adventure. At the beginning of the novel it is quite interesting, cause the way swift is able to write from his imagination at the beginning of the novel. Especially how he is able to write about tiny people and great big giants, and many other characters he has just great imagination. As the novel continues it seems though that swift began to lose his head and the story just becomes less interesting. I Especially think how Gulliver returns home not wanting to be a normal man and not wanting his family, when family is very important. Swift just really disappointed me during most of the novel.

  7. Gulliver’s Travels Book Review

I think Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathon Swift is a good book. I would not recommend it as a children’s book, and it might not make sense to young readers. It is an interesting book for older readers. Gulliver goes on many voyages and meets many new people and sees and learns new things and talents. Swift is an archaic writer. The book was written in 1726 so it’s a different tone and style of writing that what we are used to. I think it is a good book because he travels, and there are many different people, places, and things that he is introduced to. We learn that Gulliver is a giant, is a tiny little person compared to the giants of Brobdingnag, a complete idiot to the Laputians, and a wild creature to the Hoyhynums

  8. I agree with Demetria because, After all the adventure's he went on every single one ended up bad, maybe if he would have learned his lesson and stayed home he would have been wanting to be a normal man and be with his family.

  9. i agree with Demetria, because if he would have just stayed home after he went on his first voyage nothing bad would have happened to him. His family wouldnt have had to worry about him. But he is hard headed and probably trying to make a point. But all his voyages ended badly.

  10. Book review on Gulliver’s Travels
    By Landry Setliff
My main opinion on this book is that it was very dull. I will admit that it had a few exciting and entertaining parts but I found that he would go off for five pages on the smallest detail. If modern writers were to do that no one would read the book! Some people like to hear every little detail but people like me prefer to get to the point of the subject. I found my mind wandering very often when I was reading this book. It was a good book but I would have liked it more if it had more excitement. Although maybe he wasn’t trying to entertain us rather than express his opinion, I myself would rather hear about the adventure in the book. The most exciting parts were when he got to the islands, and when he left. In between there were nothing but details not intended to entertain the reader. I wanted to scream “GET TO THE POINT!”

  11. I agree with Nadine because, Gulliver always was pointing something out that was wrong wit every new people he would meet's.

  12. I agree with pj. I found the benning of the book much more intersting and enjoyable to read then the end of the book. The end of the book was kinda hard to understand. The end of the book where Gulliver turns his back on human socitey is weird because he has a mental brake with reality.

  13. I agree with whitefire15 because she makes a very good point with the theme of cannibalism. If you actually think about it, the book is a lot like cannibalism. Not man-eater cannibilism, more like bullying.

  14. Zeke’s Opinion
I think this would be a good book for high schoolers to read because it ties in with our society today in a way Gulliver’s travels show the problems or the road blocks that come up in life. No I’m not saying that life is full of ten inch people and horses that talk like us .I’m saying that no matter what you do, where you are, or who you are there is going to be a problem that has to be delt with for example Gulliver’s ship sank okay if you drive a car it can break down and you are stranded. Another thing is expectants. Every place Gulliver goes he needs to try and show the people that he will not hurt them or that he is trustworthy. Like if you go to a new school or there is a new kid in your school. People are not going to be all buddy buddy rite away they are going to find things out about them first so if you pay attention and read really closely you might learn something.

  15. I agree with whitefire15 becuase, in the novel it does express cannibalism in the way of pointing something wrong with one other. On gulliver's adventure he is putting all these culture's down and telling them how to run there goverment but when he lands on the island of Houyhnhnms he begins to like their culture and wants to be just like them this is like another term of cannibalism.

  16. i agree with jessi because it helps suport what i wrote

  17. I agree with Jessi. In every part of the book there are people picking on or pointing out something that is wrong with another person. All it is is Intolerance. Full of people judging and not excepting one other because there a little different.

  18. I agree with landry the book does go into to much detail about things. At some points Gulliver goes into detail about goverment and pollitcs and for someone who doesnt have a great understanding of goverment and pollitcs it can be quite confussing.I also found my mind woundering off when i was reading the book.It wasnt a book i liked to read i like more of the enteraining books the type that are page turner exictment at every turn .

  19. i agree with Honda because the book was confusing

  20. I agree with Zeke because what happens in the book is kinda like what happens in our life-time today. Our society is very intolerant with others. We put ourselves into little clicks and if someone wants to join this so-called "click" and your a little different than others, you wont be accepted. So because of that i do agree with what Zeke said.

  21. i agree with Nadine because Gulliver is judging

  22. i disagree with zeke i dont think it is a good book for high schooler to read. Yes, it has some good points but there are other books wih the same points but stornger.Gulliver's travels kind of beats around the bush and doesnt get to the point that it tring to potray. It bearly scraps the tip of the subject and there are other books who go into detail and explain themselves very well. those are the books worth reading

  23. I enjoyed the book but if I was Swift I would have made it more exciting. I am an easy person to entertain but when I was reading the book I was not well entertained. He spent more time talking about one little detail instead of discussing various details. More action would have brought this book to life. I mean your talking about a voyage to many islands but yet nothing exciting really happens when he is visiting the islands. There is giants, little people, and horsemen in this book you could easily draw up ideas about some type of war or conflict between them. In the beginning of the book was a little entertaining. Most books start out boring then as you read on they start to pick up and get really interesting, but in Gullivers Travels it is the complete opposite. It starts out good then gets really tired and boring. If it was to be written in modern times many people would not read this book. The cover is more exciting then actually reading the book. I was disappointed after i read the book!

  24. Demetria: I agree that he never learned his lesson but it said in the book he had a restless spirit.
Jessi: I agree with you because he came to these counhtries and always found a fault and he concentrated on that.
Zeke: I partly agree with you because it does have a few similar problems with highschool life, but as Jessi said he refused to look at the good in people and that is what we need to do in order to solve our problems.

  25. Krista i agree with you because your right. he never looks at the positive outlook. he is always negative and never happy. no one likes people who are negative. at least i don't.

Zeke i agree with you because i also think it's a good book for high school kids. the book shows how judgemental we can be. it made me think that just because you may look different doesn't mean they are a bad person.

  27. Jessi i agree with you because people do not accept others for who they are. people judge others if they dont like a certain thing about that person or for many different reasons.
Demetria i agree with you when you say he should have learned from his first couple of bad experiances. If he would have just stayed home then he would not have gone through things he did and not be the way he was at the end of the book.
P.j I agree with you because you and i had similiar opinions. I to thought the book was more interesting in the beginning of the book then in the end of the book. Did u ever think of how he could have made it better and more exciting for the reader?

  29. I agree with PJ the book was long and dissapointing

  30. I agree with jessi because she had a point. her point is that while he is different from all of the new people that he meets he is never mean to them, but thay always seem to be someone that just has to be mean to him, and find someone to pick at.
I agree with krista because during the book he is always thinking about the bad in is life, and not looking at the positive tings that are going on in his life.
I agree with zeke because in todays society there are so many things that are expected of you, and to most people there are certain things that people want you to be like, and if you are not like what they expect then they will not be very excepting of you.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jessi i agree with you because its similar to what i said.I definatley think the people in the book were intolerant and that they don't except differant people very easly.
krista i do agree with u i never looked at it from that point of view before and it makes sence.cannibalismis aq big theme in Guillivers Travels.
I don't nagree with gilbert because this book had tons of adventures.

  32. ~Demetria~
I agree with deme because gulliver ran into many predicaments on all his journies, yet he kept traveling from place to place. I think that if gulliver would have just stopped after his first journey to lilliput and stayed with his family he wouldn`t have ended up the way he did.

    ~Lanman 101~
I agree with Landry because some parts of the book was entertaining and did intrest me but after a while i grew tired and less enthused to read the book. As I was reading Gulliver`s Travels I would have to go back and re-read a few pages or so because I was lost in all the detail that Swift wrote in the novel.

    ~Jessi~
I agree with jessi because in the novel the characters were very intolerent to others. Gulliver was one of these people who were intolerent. If they weren`t like gulliver they weren`t good enough. Gulliver talked bad upon and made fun of the many people from the different places he visited.

  33. ~GULLIVER`S TRAVELS~
Gulliver went on many expeditions and during these journies he had many misfortunes. After, gulliver got back home from all his journies he changed as a person. He was a lonely man with out family and friends. He grew tired off the Yahoo`s (humans) and decided the only poeple he wanted in his life were two horses who became his close friends.
Gulliver`s Travels was a good book in many areas, but i do beleive that it could have been better. Maybe if swift would have thought more about what he was going to write instead of just writting what came to his mind. Even by just putting less detail on the little things or having to do less with politics, prejudice and intolerence. I think that more people would enjoy reading Gulliver`s Travels more if these aspects of the book were changed.
